“ong ma ni bei mei hong”

These six words were requested from Ru on the Lotus to the Goddess of Mercy. Since then, this is one of the most revered mantras in Buddhism.

mani: treasure, represents the treasure heart, is all inexhaustible treasures, represents abundance.
beimei: represents the elegant and holy lotus flower, hoping to be able to be like the lotus, out of the mud and untainted, not wrapped up in the world, to obtain their own purity.
hong: asking for blessings, is a prayer for the achievement of the lotus flower. hong: asking for blessings, meaning praying for fulfillment, admonishing people to rely on the power of the Buddha, and every time one recites it, one's heart will be purified, and one's mind will be quieted.

This mantra contains the endless blessings and compassion of the Buddhas, and is the sound manifestation of the compassion and wisdom of the Buddhas, which is extraordinarily rich in content and infinite in mystery, and contains the great power, wisdom, and compassion in the universe. The Six Character Mantra, also known as the Six Character Aphorism, is a mantra of the mind of Guanyin Bodhisattva, originating from the Sanskrit language. This mantra is the subtle mind of Guanyin Bodhisattva, and is recited frequently for its unbelievable merits and benefits.

It is said that reciting the Six Character Mantra only once is the same as reciting the Twelve Teachings handed down by the Buddha, and that the recitation of the Six Character Mantra completes the Six Degrees of the Bodhisattva and solidly eradicates any possibility of being reborn in one of the Six Paths. It is a simple practice that is easy to understand, can be practiced by all, and contains the essentials of the Buddha's teachings. If you use the Six Character Mantra as a place of refuge in times of joy and suffering, then Guanyin Bodhisattva will always be with you, and you will grow more and more devout without artifice, naturally rising to all the realizations of the Mahayana path.

The full mantra can be translated as, "You, Lotus Treasure, grant all-pervading knowledge." Through the constant recitation of the Six Character Mantra, you remember and welcome the infinite merits of Guanyin, as if calling upon him from afar, and he responds with compassion and fulfills all your wishes.

What we can gain by chanting daily:

(1) Gaining all the blessings of longevity and other comforts.
(2) We will gain unlimited eloquence and become eloquent.
(3) We will have incomparable mighty power.
(4) The ninety-nine Ganges sand-numbered Rudras, the dust-numbered Bodhisattvas, and the thirty-two heavenly beings will all gather; the four heavenly kings, the four guardians of the four directions, the many dragon kings, and the Medicine Fork Deities will protect this person and eliminate all evils, so that all things will be auspicious.
(5) Eliminating all earth, water, fire, wind and other worldly disasters.
(6) Remove all ghosts, demons and other evils.
(7) Ancestors of all generations will be reborn.
(8) Seven generations of descendants will also be benefited.
(9) If someone wears the Six Character Truth of the Great Brightness Mantra on his body, this body becomes a vajra body, such as a Shariputra, and also becomes a person in the race of the World Honored One.

How does a person have to be Bodhisattva minded, how does one develop this feeling of compassion for all living beings, firstly, we have to resolve to let Guanyin Bodhisattva be the witness of our realization, and secondly, we have to try to overcome the attitude of only helping your friends and relatives and rejecting those you don't like. When you understand that , in the many past human lives, every living being could be your relative, your attitude towards living beings will change. Any sentient being wants pleasure rather than pain, but they don't realize that pain arises from evil nature, while pleasure arises from goodness. When you think of all beings sinking into hopeless suffering, you can't help but feel great compassion.

And our parents are only two of all beings. Try to expand your compassion, at first, to your friends and relatives, then to everyone you know, even to the whole country, the whole world, and finally to the infinite beings in the three realms of reincarnation, and only when compassion reaches a certain breadth can you call it the compassion you really have.
Then, with a starting point, we must put our wishes and hopes into action, with the mind prevailing, with the motive of altruism filling our hearts from time to time, then no matter what your outward behavior is, practicing the bodhisattva mind will manage itself, and if you can maintain the bodhisattva mind, not only will you never deviate from the right path, but you will also continue to move forward and progress on the path of cultivation. When your body, speech and mind are fully immersed in helping all sentient beings to pray and be altruistic, and then you continue to recite the Great Brightness Mantra, you will be able to realize your goal even faster.

The Six Character Dhammapada Mantra is the essence of Guanyin Bodhisattva, the form of the mantra for the Bodhisattva's Six Degrees. When you recite this mantra, the Six Paramitas will arise naturally, and the practice of bodhicitta will be achieved at the same time.
